American Arnold Genthe was one of the first to practise dance photography as an art form. In 1916 he published The Book of the Dance, the first true photobook to be dedicated to dance. Long exposure times made recording dance well-nigh impossible for many decades, but Nicky van Banning shows how Genthe used this drawback to advantage to suggest movement.
