In the night of 31 January 1953 the Dutch province of Zeeland was struck by a catastrophic flood that claimed over 1800 lives. To raise funds for the victims, a single book documenting the flood was produced. Among those who rushed to the scene of the disaster were many now famous Dutch photographers at the start of their careers. The book reveals that their pictures already bear their signature and reflect the shift to documentary photography that press photography was undergoing in the 1950s.
